Title: Maintaining RPM packages under AIX
Post by: csonne on February 25, 2009, 09:09:25 AM
We are using several rpm packages under aix5.3 and 6.1 such as apache, php, gmake
If we use those packages form the linux toolbox, most of those packages are outdated, or have security problems, which is the case with php and apache.

We can then try to download the source and recompile the stuff.
This takes a lot of time and sometimes even days to get it proper compiled and packaged again.

IBM does an excellent job for their own lpp packages. But for rpm packages they running behind. :P

Does anyone have good ideas how we can make live easier to maintain rpm packages for AIX?

Well this is one for the community to sort itself out with perhaps...

Bull have their repository for compiled freeware, which other than the IBM supplied media,
is the place to go looking for such code - or so we agreed here by default last year when asked.

Michael for example spent a long time compiling a special Apache and PHP for this very server.
Once somebody's done that sort of thing it should perhaps be posted up in a repository
- issues of trust and security at a corporate level perhaps with whoever does the job
- and in this case it wouldn't help your problem because what Michael did was specifically
for a back level of AIX.

I don't think it's an issue we can expect IBM to sort out necessarily - certainly not by
public contributions.  After all this stuff is not IBM's creation - they might want to sell
you an IBM version that they will support (with it's own issues).

However, the whole idea of open source and free tools etc ought to inspire those who
use the stuff to contribute back to the pot !

re: the Toolbox, have heard reports that package updates are delayed by legal issues. no one says what the legal issues are, but that seems to be the power of the legal department. If they are unsure, it gets heldup.

As John mentioned, it is also a matter of trust - but also expense. I have wanted to consider hosting a repository, but the data transfer cost is beyond our means without some financial support. And, based on the results of a poll I ran, might still be running actually, there is not a lot of interest posted. More interest might mean financial support could be found as well.

In my experience, it always starts with a question like yours, and interest grows. Who knows where we will be in 6 months from now?

In the mean time, if anybody wants a particular package that they can't find,
at least a request posted here might find somebody that can privately send you a copy.
