Spring cleaning coming up...
« on: January 30, 2009, 02:21:15 PM »

Michael and I are contemplating a spring clean on the registered user accounts.

We've noted some suspicious behaviour, particularly from Russian addresses, and it's time to get a bit Putin about it 8) - charging about the woods with shirt off and shooting the odd tiger.

Please note that unused accounts may be deleted without warning.

As you know, you must register to post in this forum, but you can read it without registering.  The registration process requires account activation by email and sometimes admin approval.  Once registered, activity is tracked.

We have noted an increase in the rate of registrations which are not completed, and registrations which never get to be "active" on-line (no posts and no reading despite activation).  As well as multiple attempted registrations from a given IP address.

In some cases IP addresses linked to user accounts have been blocked automatically by the system (our blockip tool) following attacks from those IPs with unapproved DNS lookups, SSH login attempts, etc..

Of the registered users that have never been "active", most have highly suspicious names and/or Russian emails.  Do not therefore be surprised by a sudden cull in the user numbers.

All user ids that had never been logged on have now been deleted.

New members that do not complete the sign-up process within two weeks are now regularly purged.

Thus, the current member count contains only active real users who are able to make posts and see any login restricted areas.   There are obviously many more non-members who just passively read the public areas of the forum.

Apologies if you find your id has been removed, as the cull got really mean this time  :o

Suspicious user IDs that have not made any posts have now been deleted, where:

- Multiple user ids were registered from the same IP address.

- User ids had certain domain names in their contact email.

Next up for possible deletion, suspicious user ids that have not been on-line in
more than a year.

To cries of "EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!" and waving my magic eye wand over it  ;D

User IDs that had not logged on for more than a year have been ruthlessly purged.

The USER AGREEMENT text has been updated to reflect the now on-going regime to keep the registered users "pure"...

YOU MUST REGISTER WITH THE FORUM TO MAKE POSTINGS IN IT AND VIEW ALL AREAS.  OTHERWISE YOU MAY READ ONLY THE PUBLIC AREAS OF THE FORUM.

ACTIVATION OF AN ACCOUNT IS NORMALLY DONE BY YOU, IN REPLY TO AN EMAIL.

SOMETIMES THE FORUM IS ALSO SET FOR ADMINISTRATOR APPROVAL OF NEW IDS, A PROCESS WHICH MAY TAKE UP TO A WEEK TO COMPLETE, AT THE DISCRETION OF THE ADMIN STAFF.  WHEN APPROVED, YOU ARE SENT THE ACTIVATION EMAIL WHICH YOU MUST REPLY TO.

WE ARE SORRY FOR ANY DELAYS, MADE NECESSARY BY PAST SPAM POSTING ATTACKS.

ONCE REGISTRATION IS COMPLETE YOU SHOULD LOGIN AND USE YOUR ACCOUNT ON A REGULAR BASIS.

You have the ability, as you register, to choose your username. We advise that you think carefully as to the format of your username, as your username and email address will be used to assess whether the registration is genuine or from a robot.

Without a valid address, that can receive the activation email, you cannot complete your registration.

You should not attempt to make multiple registrations from the same IP address, as IDs with duplicate IPs are liable to be removed later.

Your password must contain at least 8 characters and use both upper and lower case letters as well as numbers, it should not include your username.  Choose something complex and unique as a password for your account, to prevent account theft.

With the user account you are about to register, you agree to never give your password out to any other person.  You also agree to NEVER use another person's account for any reason.

You agree, through your use of this forum, that you will not post any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, adult material, or otherwise in violation of any International or United States Federal law. You also agree not to post any copyrighted material unless you own the copyright or you have written consent from the owner of the copyrighted material. Spam, flooding, advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are also forbidden on this forum.

Note that it is impossible for the staff or the owners of this forum to confirm the validity of posts. Please remember that we do not actively monitor the posted messages, and as such, are not responsible for the content contained within. We do not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any information presented. The posted messages express the views of the author, and not necessarily the views of this forum, its staff, its subsidiaries, or this forum's owner. Anyone who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to notify an administrator or moderator of this forum immediately - please send a Personal Message to either "Michael" or "John Peck".

The staff and the owner of this forum reserve the right to remove objectionable content, within a reasonable time frame, if they determine that removal is necessary. This is a manual process, however, please realize that they may not be able to remove or edit particular messages immediately. This policy applies to member profile information as well.

You remain solely responsible for the content of your posted messages. Furthermore, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless the owners of this forum, any related websites to this forum, its staff, and its subsidiaries. The owners of this forum also reserve the right to reveal your identity (or any other related information collected on this service) in the event of a formal complaint or legal action arising from any situation caused by your use of this forum.

After you register and login to this forum, you will be able to fill out a detailed profile. It is your responsibility to present clean and accurate information. Any information the forum owner or staff determines to be inaccurate or vulgar in nature will be removed, with or without prior notice. Appropriate sanctions may be applicable.

Our member list is checked regularly.  Where accounts which have not been active on-line and have email addresses or usernames that appear suspicious, they are deleted without warning!  Multiple registrations from the same IP address are purged, so that the most recently used account is the only one retained!
Previously used accounts that have not made any postings in the forum, will be also be deleted if not used for long periods - presently a year.

Please note that with each post, your IP address is recorded, in the event that you need to be banned from this forum or your ISP contacted. This will only happen in the event of a major violation of this agreement.
