vim?
« on: November 15, 2019, 08:17:02 PM »
Hello again,

Is there any chance you would consider making/publishing a vim package?  Pretty please?  Like most people who are grateful for the time you spend on all of these aixtool efforts, I would love to avoid the dependency hell that IBM would currently force me to go through in order to have an editor capable of syntax colorization AIX.  I'm older now and my vision isn't what it used to be.  It seems like it would be quite helpful to have the colorization capability to show me where I have a missing backtick, quote, or other punctuation symbol in a few-thousand lines of shell script (or other language of code), along with all of the other enhancements that are in vim.  Just thought I would ask.

Or is there some alternative that I'm just not aware of, for an editor in AIX that has syntax colorization available?  In 2019 are all of my fellow AIX-ers still just using the basic version of vi that has been part of AIX forever?

Thank you again for all that you do for us.
Jeff

I'll look into it. Actually, I already had last June.

I was not completely happy with it. A: you must also install X11.base.rte; B) I could not test it - imho - because my SSH client automatically colors text.

So, please test drive and provide feedback! See http://www.aixtools.net/index.php/vim

Hi Michael,

Well, I am VERY ***VERY*** happy with this!  THANK YOU!!!  We happen to have X11.base.rte installed already, so that was no problem.  I installed this today and used it for the majority of the day.  It did everything that I was hoping for and I didn't experience any problems or glitches.  I will, of course, keep using it now that I have it.  I will let you know if I encounter any issues, but I am guessing it will work great, just as it has today.  And this was much simpler to install and less intrusive to the system than the numerous RPMs that would have otherwise been required.  I should have asked about this a long time ago!  Thank you so much!

Thanks!
Jeff

My pleasure. I am on the road for work atm, but I'll look at packaging an official (i.e., tagged) release, rather than just what happened to be the latest release at the time.

And maybe spread the word (re: installp rather than rpm (redhat package multitude)
