can depend on your version of AIX - is it the built-in version of nmon, or the add-in?

If the add-in, my first suggestion would be to update AIX if possible.

basically, your crontab entry is going to look something like

0 0 * * * "/PATH/to/NMON -s 300 -c 288 -moreArgs"

In the more arguments area: directory to store data (e.g., a newly created filesystem at /var/perf/nmon) and the arguments with the specification of the data you want to collect.

The -s 300 -c 288 means 288 entries of 5 minute (300 second) intervals. This is accurate enough for long-term monitoring on daily basis.

If there is a specific moment that you want to monitor in more detail you can use:
nmon -X

This command takes a collection every 30 seconds for one hour (i.e. -s 30 -c 120) and stores the output in the current directory.

the command crontab -e can be used to edit your crontab entries.

Hi, I know that this is very old mail but i could not stop my self
If you do not know how to use crontab,
then run smitty topas   - rest should be easy

Thanks gito! New comments are always welcome.

For everyone - the reason I suggested crontab is because there were some problems with the smitty topas way, at the time - that kept the topas/nmon recording from starting (started via /etc/inittab rather than cron).

My other change is: intervals of 6 minutes - for 240 entries per day which works better with excel (nmon_analyzer) that does not like more than 250 entries (analyzer was averaging two entries together changing 288 to 144 entries).

For the record: smitty topas is working very well now.
