Questions about migrating a powerHA cluster from a p5 to a p7.

Will it be as simple as:

1. Restore mksysb via NIM to the 2 new lpars
2. Importvg
3. Start powerHA

seems too easy

Yes, and like anything that sounds too good to be true, this probably is.

Among other things, there is a high likelihood that AIX needs to be updated for the new platform. Using nim may be the best approach as this permits NIM to install new/updated drivers, as needed.

re: PowerHA - there is a high likelihood that the disk layout will be different - if you were using diskhb, e,g. and other things.

However, if you have AIX and PowerHA updated to levels supported on Power7 you have the opportunity to make the move - in test - why "production" continues on Power5.

In short, the move is not the hard part, but the base preparations needed for the move -- OR -- do the hard work first, and test, before declaring Power7 production.
